The WesterwaldSteig is celebrating its 15th birthday this year. All hiking enthusiasts and fans of the "Top Trail of Germany" are cordially invited to celebrate this special anniversary in style. In order to cover as many sections of the trail as possible, a wide range of varied guided hikes will be offered from April 2023 - from family adventure hikes and hikes with readings to sporty tours. Every participant takes part in a prize draw and has the chance to win attractive prizes from the region. The main prize is a hot air balloon ride, which promises a completely new perspective on the hiking paradise of the Westerwald.

15 years are worth looking back on the beginnings and development of the WesterwaldSteig. Before the trail could be officially opened on May 24, 2008 on the Fuchskaute, a large number of preliminary meetings, discussions and plans had to be made with various stakeholders. Five route teams were tasked with finding the best route. The result, the 235-kilometre WesterwaldSteig trail with its 16 stages from Herborn to Bad Hönningen, is impressive and continues to delight many hikers from near and far.
Today, 19 volunteer trail patrons and the trail management team are still working regularly to keep the WesterwaldSteig trail at a high level of quality, even after 15 years. The prolonged drought and the bark beetle infestation of recent years are constantly presenting those responsible with new challenges. Nonetheless, the Westerwald Touristik-Service is sticking to its flagship project together with the municipalities.
