Fishing on the Wied

A person holds a fishing rod over a calm river under a blue sky, with the text Angeln an der Wied and local tourism information in German.

The Wied in the area between Neustadt and Niederbreitbach is ideal for fishing. Some parts are shallow, some have a wilder course and others are dammed by weirs. The many campsites on the banks of the Wied in the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park offer particularly good opportunities. The areas are divided into the following sections:

  • Neustadt: three sections between Ehrenstein Monastery and Brochenbach Valley
  • Roßbach: tributary Masbach to tributary Elsbach
  • Waldbreitbach: Elsbach tributary to Kreuzkapelle chapel
  • Hausen: Kreuzkapelle to Schießplatzweg
  • Niederbreitbach: Schießplatzweg to the Nonnenbach tributary

Permits for the respective sections are available from the Tourist Information Office and Waldbreitbach Town Hall, at Wiedhof Waldbreitbach campsite, Neuerburg Niederbreitbach campsite and at the ARAL petrol station as well as at the municipal office in Neustadt.

Fishing is not permitted during the spring closed season, which ends on May 31. In June, only monthly and annual permits may be sold. Children and young people must also present a fishing license when purchasing permits. From the age of 7, fishing is permitted when accompanied by an adult, from the age of 14 alone. A daily permit costs between €9.00 and €25.00. An annual permit costs between €55.00 and €85.00.

Some new rules apply from this season, such as fishing with a hand rod, two fishing rods for annual permit holders, a year-round fishing ban for noses and the popular fly fishing is now also permitted. Maps of the sections and all prices can be found at www.wiedtal.de and in the newly published flyer.
