From the 373 m high Malberg in Hausen an der Wied, visitors have always had a magnificent panoramic view of the Wiedtal valley and the heights of the Westerwald. The parking lot area and the viewpoint have been completely redesigned by the municipality.
The new parking lot is already visible on the approach road. The parking spaces have been marked out and separated by basalt gabions to enable regulated parking. The route continues to a seating area made of basalt and wood, complemented by a hiking board with the paths in the nature park. From here you have a view of the flowering strip consisting of bee and bird-friendly shrubs and flowers. Access to the summit cross on the crater rim high above the Malbergsee lake is now also step-free. Two more benches await guests here.
The state-approved climatic health resort on the Wied has placed great emphasis on local materials and plants. Much of the work was carried out by municipal workers or volunteers. The municipality around Mayor Carmen Boden has invested almost €90,000 and received further funding from grants from the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park, the Rhineland-Palatinate state investment fund and the "More green in the village" campaign from the district of Neuwied.
There are many hiking trails around Malberg, such as the WesterwaldSteig, the local Hausener trails and the basalt nature trail. Basalt was quarried here until the beginning of the 20th century. Interesting basalt walls can still be seen and information boards explain the history through exciting graphics. The Malberg hut serves regional food and drinks.
