One of Germany's oldest nature parks celebrates a milestone birthday
Anniversary celebration of the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park surrounded by archaeology, history and nature: with a view of the Neuwied Basin, the nature park celebrated its 60th anniversary at the Monrepos Archaeological Research Center and Museum of Human Behavioral Evolution.
The first chairwoman of the nature park, Isabelle Fürstin zu Wied, welcomed those present with a look back. She emphasized the strength of the nature park through its local roots in the communities, the population and local stakeholders and thanked the managing director Irmgard Schröer and her staff for their commitment and the successful implementation of the many projects.
Originally created as a local recreation area, the view of the importance of the natural and cultural landscape for people has constantly changed over six decades and with it the tasks of the nature park.
"For 60 years, the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park has been reconciling the ecological protection concept of nature parks and the preservation of the landscape with tourism development. For example, the nature park manages to convey the value of biodiversity and the beauty of nature in all its facets through unique nature experiences, such as the preservation of an orchid meadow, or through the 'Naturgenuss-Partner' project and educational work in the nature park nurseries," said State Secretary for Climate Protection Dr. Erwin Manz.
The new image film of the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park was presented as part of the celebrations. Finally, Jörg Hohenadl, an employee of the Neuwied district's business development department, presented the 'Naturgenuss-Partner' cooperation project developed jointly with the nature park.
