The Wied, the longest river in the Westerwald, gives its name to the 110 km long Wiedweg. The Wied is a major feature of the Westerwald and shapes large parts of the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park. From its source near Linden close to the Westerwald lake district, the trail leads through picturesque valleys and pretty villages to the Neuwied district of Irlich. In seven daily stages of 13 to 19 km, hikers follow the blue "W" markings on a white background.
In 2021, the markings were revised throughout by the Westerwald-Verein e.V. in cooperation with the municipalities of Hachenburg, Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld, Puderbach, Asbach, Rengsdorf-Waldbreitbach and the town of Neuwied, so that the trail was once again awarded the "Qualitätsweg Wanderbares Deutschland" certificate by the German Hiking Association this year.
The description of the individual stages with start and finish points, information on altitude profiles, public transport and places to stop for refreshments and parking are summarized in detail in the newly published brochure "Stage Hiking on the Wiedweg".
