Wildlife and nature observation in the Westerwald

A person in a blue jacket kneels and feeds a brown goat standing on a large log, with more goats and a fence in the background on a farm.

The Westerwald invites nature lovers to unforgettable animal encounters along its picturesque hiking trails. Whether wildlife parks, bird sanctuaries or educational trails - the region offers a wide range of opportunities to experience flora and fauna up close.

The WesterwaldSteig offers impressive encounters with native and sometimes rare animal species. The Herborn Zoo in Herborn-Uckersdorf is located directly on the trail and is home to over 90 different animal species from all over the world on an area of more than one hectare. The Bad Marienberg Wildlife Park, which is also located directly on the WesterwaldSteig and the "Wolfsteine" Little Wäller Route, is home to wild boar, deer, lynx and many other native species. Another highlight along the WesterwaldSteig trail are the Heck cattle in Grenzbachtal, a breed of aurochs that live there in a natural environment. A special experience: some of the hiking trails lead right through the pastures.

Druidensteig stage 4: Through important bird sanctuaries

The fourth stage of the Druidensteig trail from Daaden to Elkenrother Weiher crosses several nature and bird sanctuaries. These include one of the most important breeding and resting areas in the Westerwald for cranes, lapwings and the rare Laro limicoles.

Wäller Tour Hohe Hahnscheid & WesterwaldSteig stage 4: Holzbach Gorge bird trail

A special highlight for bird lovers is the educational bird trail in the Holzbachschlucht gorge, initiated by the internationally renowned DJ and biologist Dominik Eulberg. The trail consists of several information boards that not only provide exciting facts about local bird species, but also contain QR codes.

Little Wäller Dwarf Trail 2: Bat adventures in the Laubach Valley

The Little Wäller Dwarf Trail 2 near Rengsdorf is a 4.5 km adventure trail through nature and is a particularly exciting destination for families. Children can playfully discover the surroundings on an exciting rally with quiz questions.
